Boleslaw K. Szymanski
Professor, Computer Science
Education:
M.S., Electronics, Warsaw Technical University, 1973
Ph.D., Computer Science, National Academy of Science, Warsaw, 1976
Career Highlights:
Szymanski served as a visiting assistant professor in computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania from 1982 through '85. He then joined Rensselaer as an associate professor of computer science. He currently serves as professor of computer science, chair of the Information Technology Research Board and associate dean for information technology. During his career, he has served as a consultant and entrepreneur for many companies including the United Nations Development Office, IBM Corporation and General Electric Corporation. He earned a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Mathematics in 1968; was named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1999; and earned first place in SuCuPar93, international parallel computation competition in Mannheim, Germany in 1993. Szymanski served as guest editor for the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Applied Computing journal called Applied Computing Review in 1996 and has been editor-in-chief of Scientific Programming since 2000.
Research Areas:
Szymanski's research interests include network management and simulation, including the Internet; network middleware and web-based computing; scientific parallel computation, in particular run-time optimization; load balancing and monitoring of parallel and distributed object-oriented programs; optimization of scientific computations on the grid; and algorithm design and verification for parallel and distributed systems. He led the development of TEMPEST, the Territorially Explicit Multi-Processor Ecological System Tool for building population biology models. Another simulation tool has been developed for IBM SP-series machines using Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES) for modeling Lyme disease.
